Elijah Craig Barrel Proof- B517

We've reviewed batches of Heaven Hill's Elijah Craig Barrel Proof before. See here and here. It's long been considered a "best bang for your buck bourbon," and it deserves all of the accolades it's received. Recently, Whisky Advocate magazine crowned Batch B517 of ECBP its 2017 Whisk(e)y of the Year. We were lucky to stumble upon a bottle of that batch, a 12-year-old, 124.2 proof beauty in the distillery's relatively new, flatter bottle. Author Jeffery Lindenmuth called it a "mouth-filling, deeply satisfying...amazingly palatable whiskey." We agree. This is a must have bottle.

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof- B517

Heaven Hill
124.2 proof
$60 at ABC in Richmond, VA

Color

The same deep, rich mahogany that ECBP is famous for.

Nose

A classic bourbon whiskey profile- caramel, oak, toffee, some spice. Batch B517 opens up and reveals sweet, fruitier notes- grape, orange, red berry. This is a whiskey I could just sit and smell.  Not!  On to taste.

Tasting Notes

Bang. Brown sugar, caramel, orange zest, lightly charred oak, and a wonderful tobacco note. Compared to previous batches of ECBP, this is so drinkable. The finish is long and heats the chest cavity like it should.

Overall

A. While it's hard to label one whiskey "the best of the year," there is no doubt that ECBP Batch B517 is up there in our Top 5. And for $60, it retains the belt for "best value" in the premium bourbon category.
