Michter's Barrel Strength Toasted Barrel Finish Rye

About two years ago, I published this post about Michter's Whiskey, which examines the history of the original distillery in Schaefferstown, PA, the evolution of the brand, and happenings at the current distillery in Louisville. The first post led to several phone conversations with Joe Magliocco, the owner of Chatham Imports (i.e. the parent company of Michter's Distillery, LLC). Joe ultimately invited me to tour the new Michter's distillery in historic Shively, which I did during a trip to Kentucky for Easter last year. It is a beautiful, modern facility manned by expert whiskey men and women.

Over the last year or so, I reviewed eight distinct Michter's whiskeys on the blog:

Michter's US*1 Bourbon

Michter's Unblended American Whiskey

Michter's Barrel Strength Rye (108.4 proof)

Michter's Barrel Strength Rye (111.8 proof)

Michter's 10 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon

Michter's 10 Year Old Single Barrel Rye

Michter's Toasted Barrel Bourbon

1970's Michter's Whiskey made at the original distillery in Schaefferstown, PA

Below is our ninth review of Michter's whiskey- this time a bottle of the 2017 Barrel Strength Toasted Barrel Finish Rye Whiskey. The product features Michter's Barrel Strength Rye (which is amazing juice), further aged in "toasted" barrels made from oak staves that were air dried for 24 months. I've been looking forward to this bottle.

Color

Beautiful, dark copper.

Nose

Like walking into a dim, humid rackhouse in the summer, the aroma entices with big cinnamon, caramel, and wood notes.

Tasting Notes

Intense, spicy cinnamon gives way to dark cherry, chocolate, and oak. The spice lingers on the palate for days.

Overall

A. Superb, strong rye whiskey. A masterpiece in my book.
