Barrell Bourbon Batch 011 and Whiskey Batch 004

We've reviewed Barrell Bourbon Batches 005, 006007008, 009, and 010. We also reviewed Barrell Whiskey Batch 002. Joe Beatrice and crew consistently release delicious, cask strength whiskeys worth writing home (or blog posts) about.

Barrell Bourbon Batch 011 is a 6-year-old, 114.8 proof Tennessee straight bourbon whiskey and features a 70% corn/25% rye/5% malted barley mash bill.

Barrell's Whiskey Batch 004 is a 120.6 proof blend of Indiana and Tennessee whiskeys, the youngest of which is 11-years-old, finished in rum and rye barrels. As you can see above, I hadn't tasted Whiskey 004 when I took the photo. After cracking it open, I'm having a difficult time putting it down. . .it's very good.

Barrell Bourbon Batch 011
114.8 proof
6 years old. 70% corn, 25% rye, 75% malted barley.

Color: Light copper.

Nose: Butterscotch candies, hot caramel, sweet tobacco, and smoky oak make for an inviting aroma.

Tasting Notes: The sweet nose carries over in the flavor profile, but it's dominated by heat. I get the caramel, sweet tobacco, and cinnamon candies, but I would have guessed this juice was 130 proof. I recommend a few drops of water, which is rare for me.

Overall: B+. A devilish candy shop experience. Sweet on the nose, fire on the tongue.

Barrell Whiskey Batch 004

120.6 proof
11 years old. A blend of Indiana whiskey finished in rum barrels; Indiana whiskey finished in rye barrels; Tennessee whiskey finished in rum barrels; and Tennessee whiskey finished in rye barrels.

: Tawny; very light for 11-year-old, cask strength American whiskey.

Nose: Light on the nose. It takes some work to discern notes of Siskiyou cedar wood, mint, and leather. The aroma is unique and mysterious.

Tasting Notes: I get Big Red cinnamon gum, candied apricot, chocolate covered cherry, and tingly rye. The long finish is pleasant and complex.
Overall: A. A masterful blend of sugar and spice. One of the most intriguing Barrell whiskeys I've tasted. Bravo!
