Thomas H. Handy Rye Whiskey (2015)

Thomas H. Handy "Sazerac" Straight Rye Whiskey is a 6-year-old barrel strength rye whiskey. It was distilled at Buffalo Trace in the spring of 2009 from a combination of Minnesota rye, Kentucky corn, and North Dakota malted barley. Only 58 barrels, aged in Warehouses I, K, and M were hand selected to be released as part of the annual Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC).

The 2015 release was barreled at 125 proof and dumped/bottled at 126.9 proof. A diluted version of similarly aged Buffalo Trace rye is bottled and sold as Sazerac Rye, also known as "Baby Saz."

Color: Beautiful, dark amber.

Nose: Big nose! Bold combination of sweet and astringent aromas. Caramel, orange peel, cocoa, alcohol punch, salty ocean air, leather.

Tasting Notes: Sweet honey and caramel transition very quickly to darkness. Chocolate, cinnamon, extra woody rye spice, so much tongue burn.

Overall: A-. THH is not the highest proof whiskey I've ever sipped- not by a long shot. But it will take your breath away. It will make you tear up. It's the kind of American whiskey I'd give to a Scotch drinker who thinks that American whiskey is too sweet or too smooth. THH 2015 is flavorful and extremely hearty. The best part about it: we got it for $80 at the local ABC. Cheers to good relationships with your local liquor store manager!
