Elijah Craig 12 Year

Elijah Craig 12 Year Old Small Batch bourbon is named after the controversial Baptist preacher from Orange County, Virginia. Rev. Craig, upon facing persecution for his beliefs, is said to have worked closely with Patrick Henry and James Madison to ensure Virginia's ratification of the U.S. Constitution for its freedom of religion principles.

Elijah Craig, nonetheless, followed his brother Lewis westward to Fayette County, Virginia via the Cumberland Gap in 1782. In 1789, the good Rev. Craig founded a distillery and began producing American corn whiskey!

Heaven Hill ages Elijah Craig Small Batch for 12 years in a nod to the amount of time Reverand Craig probably spent in purgatory...

94 proof
$29 at ABC in Columbia, SC

Color: Mahogany; darker than most.

Nose: Lots of oak and alcohol up front; after some aeration- brown sugar, toasted marshmallow, grapefruit, light corn, vanilla, and a little spice.  Really nice.

Tasting notes: Hot damn, a fair amount of alcohol burn and rye spice for a 94 proof bourbon, but there are sweet notes in there too. Classic caramel, vanilla, and burnt brown sugar, but there is an oak punch and bitter chocolate finish that lingers nicely on the palate.

Overall: B+. Elijah Craig 12 Year means business. The oak flavor is unmistakable but delicious. You can really appreciate the age in the deep wood flavor, but there are so many other lingering flavors and layers.
